Finding News

Some news is automated, but here are some ideas of where to find other news sources for your website:

  • News can be found in This Week at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability email that is sent every Monday. Much of these are automatically importing.
  • SDSS "Inside" email that contains monthly updates for our school community.
  • "On Our Planet" newsletter (formerly Earth Matters). Some of these are also importing.
  • Stanford Report

Add news to your website in a variety of ways:

Shared/imported from other websites on the Doerr platform

We have the ability to share news teasers with other sites on our platform.  Currently we have implemented this for news stories that are tagged with department taxonomy terms and feed into those department sites automatically.

If you want a news story from another website on the Doerr school platform to import automatically into your website (that is not currently importing), contact Web Services and they can point you to the correct person to help with this tagging.

Creating News Teasers

News teasers are pieces of information about a news article (that is relevant to your website), but resides on another website.  You can enter a few pieces of content about the news article with a featured image and link off to the original source.

  1. From the admin menu, hover over All Content > Add Content > then click on News
  2. From the original article enter (copy/paste): the Headline/Title, Dek (intro text), Publishing Date, Byline (author), and External Source (URL to the article), News Source.
    • Note that if you enter a URL in the External Source field, when someone clicks the link in your News story it will take them to that link (i.e. the original article).
  3. Scroll down to Featured Media and click add media to upload a teaser image (this image can be downloaded from the original news article. It needs to be in a 2:1 ratio to look appropriate in this field).
     See more on adding images
  4. Leave the remaining fields blank.
  5. Scroll to the bottom and save.
  6. Each teaser will feed into the News page sorted by article date.

Entering a full News Article

Before you create an entire news article that would reside specifically on your website, you should contact Dee Tucker (dttucker@stanford.edu) to see if she is already curating a similar story.

  1. Follow steps 1-3 above, but do not enter a URL in the External Source field.
  2. Since there is no external source, you can skip the News Source field since it will be located on your site.
  3. Scroll down and enter a Featured Media image (this shows up in the list on the News page).
  4. Enter Banner Media, Caption & Caption (long)  (as needed) if you want a banner on your News story.
  5. Paragraphs - If you want to add paragraph types to your News article, under Paragraphs, click Add section. From there, select the number of columns, then click save.  Hover over the paragraphs section you just added and click the + sign. Choose a paragraph type you'd like to use.  Text area is a common one. Enter content here and format as needed.  You can also include images in this section.
    • You can add additional section above & below the one you just added.  Hover over the section you just added and click Add section.
    • You have a choice of:
      • Text Area
      • Banner (uses a full row)
      • Card
      • Media with caption (videos can be added here)
      • Teaser
      • Spacer
      • Image Gallery (uses a full row)
      • Callout Quote
      • Lists
      • Editorial Sidebar
      • News List Card
  6. Media Contacts - if there are contacts for this story, enter them here.
  7. Media Mention checkbox - if you only want this article to appear under the Media Mentions news type page, check this box. Otherwise, leave unchecked.
  8. Related content - if there are faculty, people, news or events related to this story on your site, enter them here.
    1. Related Content  - If you want to specify exactly which news articles display at the bottom, enter them here. In this field start typing the title of a news item and it will start listing anything with those terms. Select the one you want. Add another item as needed. SEE BELOW for how to make these display on this news article.
    2. Options for Explore more - at the bottom of every news page is an Explore more section (usually 3 items).  To curate what shows up here:
      • Under Display:
        • The first option Explore more news - random is the default. This will pull other random news stories.
        • Explore more news - show articles that have selected this article, will do just that.
        • Explore more news - Use related content selections, will use the articles you entered above under Related Content to populate this section.
          • Note: If you add items to related content above, but don't select this option, you will get the default random list of news.
    3. In the Related People field start typing the name of the person and their profile title should appear. Click on their name to select them. Add another item as needed.
  9. Under Taxonomy, ignore  these sections unless you have taxonomy terms set up for them.
  10. Scroll to the bottom and save.
  11. Your article will feed into your News page sorted by article date. When anyone clicks the link, it will go to the article on your site.
