11. Capitalization

“Avoid unnecessary capitals,” according to the AP Stylebook, which offers a list of principles to guide capitalization.

Lowercase university when it is not part of a proper name.

Capitalize schools and formal names of offices: School of Engineering, Office of Development. As in guidelines for “Academic Departments,” the of may be dropped and the title flipped while capitalization is retained: Engineering School, Development Office. Lowercase smaller units (e.g., budget control division of the Controller’s Office) and generic names of offices (e.g., dean’s office).
