6. Academic titles; other campus titles

Main content start

Capitalize and spell out formal titles such as professor, professor emeritus, associate professor, assistant professor, provost, dean, chairman, etc., when they precede a name; lowercase elsewhere. For long titles, an appositional construction is preferred: Fiorenza Micheli, chair of the Oceans Department and co-director of the Center for Ocean Solutions, versus Chair of the Oceans Department Fiorenza Micheli..

Lowercase modifiers such as civil and environmental engineering in Khalid Osman, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, or Sarah Billington, chair of civil and environmental engineering. Capitalize formal names of departments, as in Sarah Billington, chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Any reference to planet “Earth” should be capitalized. Drop “program” from Earth systems in the title when referring to people. Refer to the department for the title, even if they teach in the Earth Systems Program. It is preferred to use the appositional style mentioned above.

  • Earth System Science Professor Rob Dunbar or Rob Dunbar, professor of Earth System Science
  • Earth systems advisor Richard Nevle or Richard Nevle, advisor, Earth systems
