4. Academic departments and programs

Capitalize the formal name: Department of Oceans, Earth Systems Program. The “of” may be dropped and the title flopped while capitalization is retained: Oceans Department. Lowercase department in plural uses, but capitalize the proper name element: the departments of History and Political Science.

The school’s official name is the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability; according to the gift agreement, refer to the school by the full name, and on second reference it is permissible to drop “Stanford” (Doerr School of Sustainability). What this means in practice: Use the school where possible, and the full name where necessary. The initialism SDSS is only used for internal communications.

The Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability includes seven academic departments, three interdisciplinary programs, two institutes, and the Sustainability Accelerator.
